Global Speakers Summit 2013

I’m on my way to Vancouver to participate in the Global Speakers Summit where motivational and inspirational speakers from all over the world will gather. It’s exciting because the Canadian Association of Professional Speakers – of which I am a proud member – is launching a Peer Support Program (PSP).

A year ago I had this germ of an idea about creating a PSP for our professional association and got the go-head. I’ve spent a lot of time researching and developing it. I’ve recruited the volunteers, set up the training program, developed the guidelines, figured out how to bring this to life and now we’re set to go.

During a panel discussion I’ll be inviting (and encouraging) folks to talk about a tough issue most of us are not used to discussing with colleagues – how our personal, family and life events, crises and challenges can turn our worlds upside down and send us into a free-fall spin. Tough stuff to deal with and for many tougher to talk about but it’s part of life and not something we should be embarrassed or ashamed about.

With the launch of our PSP we now have a way to offer a colleague who goes a crisis like a trauma or loss or depression a little support, hope and encouragement by another colleague who understands because he or she has been there and knows what it’s like.

There are so many people and places that could benefit from peer support. This is now part of my mission to help organizations make this happen.

Welcome to My New Site

Welcome to my new website. It’s exciting for me to focus my energies on doing what I am passionate about – helping to make life at work healthier and safer for people. Everyone wins when we stop bullying and resolve conflicts and create an environment that is welcoming, respectful and inclusive. I want to pass on information, generate dialogue and support people so that we can make this happen. We can stop people from becoming emotionally wounded that they have to take a sick leave to recover from a psychological injury that is preventable. That’s my goal.

Now it’s your turn – tomorrow, do one nice thing for someone at work whom you know is having a rough day. Take an extra couple of minutes to tell the person how you appreciate his or her help, speak kindly or just say “thank you” and see how much these simple acts can light up a face.
